New York-based artists and LABspace curators Ellen Letcher and Julie Torres will give an artist talk on Wednesday, January 15 (6pm in Derthick 101). The talk will be centered on art-making, curating, and running a thriving artist-run space in upstate New York. All are welcome!

Following the talk, join us for a casual reception for an exhibition of their work at Office Space, a curatorial project hosted in my faculty office (Bretske 203). Selected work by upper division Painting and Drawing majors will also be on view in the Bretske entryway and hallways.

This event is made possible with generous support through a UTC High-Impact Practices Development Grant. Special thanks to junior Graphic Design major Lilith Jackson for designing the promotional materials.

About the Artists and Curators: In 2018, Letcher and Torres took the reins at LABspace gallery in Hillsdale, New York, founded by artist Susan Jennings. They are deeply engaged in the Hudson Valley, Berkshire, and greater New York art communities through connecting artists at LABspace, attending area exhibitions and studios, exhibiting their own artwork, and guest-curating in other spaces. Their projects have been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post, Hyperallergic, Brooklyn Magazine, Chronogram and Two Coats of Paint. They kick off their second year of programming at LABspace by inviting every artist on their email list to participate in a sprawling holiday show of 200–300 artists.

If you miss the talk but would like to see the exhibition, work by Letcher and Torres will be on view through February 24.

Where: Office Space is located in Bretske Hall 203, located right in the center of campus, at the top of Cardiac Hill and across from Hunter Hall (http://www.utc.edu/auxiliary-services/maps.php).

When: Office hours are Monday 2–4pm or email christina-vogel@utc.edu to make an appointment.

About OS: Through this curatorial endeavor, I invite several artists per academic year to show their work in my UTC faculty office. It is in the spirit of connecting with artists from beyond our region, with the aim to bolster our artistic community by building new relationships, that I have developed this project. It is a chance for me to live with the work of artists I admire for a time, but I also see it as an opportunity to share work that I’m excited about with my students, the university, and our community beyond campus. The best way to learn about visual art is to experience it in person, and I would love to welcome you to my office to share this work.
