Details: Dr. Clif Cleaveland presents on Rachel Joyce’s Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, the award-winning novel about a man who, upon hearing of a friend’s imminent death, decides on impulse to walk 600 miles across England to see her one last time.

After a two-year hiatus, UTC’s popular reading series returns, this time with a focus on the roles that faith and religion have played in western history and literature over the past 500 years

This year’s focus on faith and religion was inspired in large part by the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, which the world observed in October 2017. When UTC hosted a collection of scholars and pastors to discuss the Reformation’s legacy last November, the auditorium was filled beyond capacity. It was clear from that lively event how matters of faith continue to be a topic of widespread fascination and debate. In that same spirit of intellectual and artistic inquiry, the Department of English and the George C. Connor Professorship of American Literature are pleased to showcase five different UTC faculty members who will offer a lecture on a book of his or her choosing. All five texts will address some aspect of religion or spirituality. After the lecture, the panelists will field questions and comments from the audience.

Light refreshments will be provided, and all five books are now available for purchase at the UTC Bookstore. The events, which are free and open to the public, are held on Tuesday nights at 6 PM in the Chattanooga Rooms of the UC.
